Should We Do a First Look? | Wedding Planning Tips | Colorado Mountain Wedding Photographer | Kathryn Kim Photography | Colorado Wedding Photographer | Denver Wedding Photographer | Advice for Brides | Colorado Engagement Photographer

sweet bride and groom are both crying during first look on wedding day

Ahhh the all too familiar question of, “should we do a first look?” First of all, maybe I should start with explaining what a first look is! It has become popular in weddings these days for the bride and groom to see each other before the ceremony, and have that sweet moment photographed. You will then do the majority of your bride and groom portraits. Some couples struggle with whether or not to forego the old tradition of first seeing each other when walking down the aisle. I am here to give you some pros and cons, and hopefully give you an answer to your question of “should we do a first look?”

1. It takes less pressure off the groom to have the picture perfect reaction.

You may have noticed that these days all eyes are on the groom as the bride starts walking down the aisle. Everyone is hoping for a bold reaction, whether it be tears or a massive smile. When you do a first look, it’s an intimate moment shared between the two of you. And you can feel absolutely free to express your genuine reactions without everyone staring at you. This also means you get to hug each other and voice how incredible the other person looks. Otherwise you have to wait 30 minutes until the ceremony is over, and then try to express those initial emotions after!

2. More time for bride and groom photos!

In my opinion, the most important photos of the day are the bride and groom portraits. After all we are here to celebrate the two of you and your passionate love and commitment, right?! When you do a first look you get to add on a couple of hours at the beginning of the day. Then you can dedicate as much time as you want to the bride and groom portraits. This ensures that you guys will be relaxed and not feeling rushed. Then we can really get the best portraits possible of the two of you. You might not realize it, but when you don’t do a first look, the bride and groom portraits are the last thing to squeeze in before the reception starts. And if the ceremony started late, or family formals take longer than expected, guess what gets cut short? You guessed it, bride and groom portraits!

3. The amount of time that you two get to spend together on your wedding day is extended by several hours.

When you do a first look you get more hours to spend with each other and your entire bridal party! And after all like I mentioned before, this day is about the two of you. And it does go by SO fast. So getting to spend those extra few hours together is so valuable, and not to mention extra fun!

4. Ease the nerves.

Most people are super nervous towards the end of the getting ready portion. The reality of the day starts to settle in. And as the ceremony draws closer, those nerves only get stronger. Every one of my couples that have done a first look have said that seeing their significant other makes them feel so much more calm! It eliminates nerves, and then they feel mostly excited instead of nervous. It takes the pressure off and helps you just enjoy the day more!

5. Your groom can still get emotional when seeing you walk down the aisle, even if you have done a first look!

I know this is one reason why some brides don’t want to do a first look. They want that sweet reaction because this is the moment that they have dreamed of for many years. And I totally get that! But I’ve had so many grooms get emotional during the first look, and then get just as emotional if not more during the ceremony. Because it’s the moment of actually seeing their bride coming toward them, and getting ready to make that forever commitment and start their lives together. It just stirs up all the emotions once again. And he can embrace the moment fully since he is no longer in shock and the nerves have been eased! Also a lot of brides will save their veil for just the ceremony so it’s a new special look for the groom to see!

Obviously I have a ton of reasons why I think first looks are so beneficial for your wedding day. Honestly I don’t really have any cons to doing them, but with that being said. If you still think that you want to go the traditional route and not see each other until you’re walking on the aisle… I am in support of you and your decision! This day is all about you two, and I want to do whatever’s going to make you guys the happiest! And we will still get beautiful bride and groom portraits no matter what! I just hope this blog post helps answer the question of, “should we do a first look?” Thanks for reading!

intimate Colorado backyard wedding bride and groom beautiful sunset portraits

This intimate Colorado backyard wedding is hard for me to write about. In a good way! I just have a really difficult time putting my feelings about this couple into words. Meeting and working with them has deeply affected me. I get emotional every time I look at their engagement or wedding photos. Let me back up. I first met with Jess and Nathan at a coffee shop to get to know each other. Within about 5 minutes of being with them, you can’t help but love them and be in support of their marriage. They are two of the most joyful, funny, light hearted people who adore each other like crazy. You can tell they have a deep rooted friendship and are 100% themselves with each other. It is a beautiful thing to experience.

A few months after our meeting, we did their Evergreen Colorado engagement session which you may recall. This session peeled back the layers a bit more and let me get to know them even better. They have such a romance, and their chemistry is powerful. At one point, I played some music and had them slow dance. It felt so intimate I started to feel as though I shouldn’t be there, and I even teared up. This is just a glimpse into who they are. So when they told me they wanted an intimate Colorado backyard wedding, you know I was 100% on board!

They had their wedding at Jess’s boss’s house out in Parker. It was absolutely perfection, and the wedding screamed Jess and Nathan with worship, outbursts of dancing, sunglasses, chick-fil-a. It was amazing. I truly believe these were created to be together, and I am so excited for their marriage. I know together they will change the world! Enjoy my faves from this incredible intimate Colorado backyard wedding! And try not to fall in love with these two lovebirds!

I am thrilled to share this Loveland Pass engagement with you! Meg and Joe are an amazing, laid back couple. We had such a great time during their outdoor mountain engagement session. These two Coloradans love the outdoors and are incredible snowboarders. Apparently when they met, Meg had never snowboarded before, and soon into their relationship was crushing black diamonds. So if that tells you anything about them! They mentioned wanting a Colorado mountain engagement session and I was of course 100% on board!

We chose a Loveland Pass engagement session, which is one of my favorite locations. I love that you can get two really different looks without going too far. First you have the beautiful woodsy feel amongst the aspen trees, and then you also get the epic mountain views. A good snowy session is always a dream come true for me!

You will quickly see that Meg and Joe have a ton of steamy chemistry! I love when couples don’t hesitate to get close and show their affection. They totally rocked this engagement session, which made me super excited for their Colorado mountain wedding! I did things backwards and posted their beautiful Mountain View Ranch wedding first, so please check it out here if you’d like to see those photos!

I hope you enjoy this Loveland Pass engagement! Please get in touch if you’re looking for a Colorado mountain wedding photographer! It would be absolutely lovely to chat with you about your engagement session or upcoming wedding!

{wedding day tips} wedding planning advice | kathryn kim photography

Wedding Day Tips | Wedding Planning Advice | Tips for Brides | Kathryn Kim Photography | Colorado Mountain Wedding Photographer | Colorado Wedding Photographer | Denver Wedding Photographer | Colorado Wedding Photographer

Your big day is almost here, yay! I have been collecting valuable wedding day tips throughout my years of experience as a Colorado mountain wedding photographer, and I would love to share them with you!

wedding day tips Candid photo of bride and groom at spruce mountain ranch

  1. Play music during the getting ready portion of your wedding day!                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Music is a great way to get you pumped up and excited for the joyous day ahead of you! It’s a great way to distract you from any nerves, and to let loose and have fun with your bridesmaids (or groomsmen!) After all, this day is supposed to be fun, right?! If you’re into playlists, create one ahead of time (or assign this fun task to a friend who knows your taste in music). Or choose a couple of your favorite Pandora stations and have them handy. I’m telling you, music makes a huge difference in the vibe of the day!
  2. Eat lunch and hydrate! Have someone in charge of providing lunch for the bride and groom and all the bridal party. And drink lots of water. Especially if anyone is coming from sea level- hydration is so key! We want everyone feeling great and no one passing out during the ceremony, right?!
  3. Remember to smile when walking down the aisle! This goes for everyone: groom, bride, bride’s dad or whoever walks you down the aisle, bridal party!
  4.  Face each other and hold hands during the ceremony! This seems obvious, but sometimes couples forget. We want your lovey dovey and happiness to come across in the photos!wedding day tips play music during getting ready
  5. Try to be together as much as possible throughout the wedding day so that your memories are together.                                                                                                                                                      Someone gave me this advice before I got married, and Chris and I took it to heart. We tried to spend the entire day together: mingling with guests together, dancing together etc. Creating wedding day memories together! And I am so thankful for that advice because after all, this day is all about the two of you! It’s so easy to get pulled in different directions all day, but then you have totally different memories and experiences from your wedding day. So try and stick together! 🙂
  6. Speaking of memories, quickly write down all your favorite moments from the whole wedding day the next day!                                                                                                                                   Do it while everything is still fresh in your mind so you don’t forget anything! A great time to do this is when you’re on the plane to your honeymoon, or just whenever you have a quick minute. I just “wrote” mine in a note on my phone and emailed it to myself later. It’s super fun to look back on and remember all the special little moments!
  7. Do your best to speak to all your guests and thank them for coming to celebrate you guys!                                                                                                                                                                       Right after you eat dinner is a great time to make your way around to all the tables and say hi, share a hug and a quick catch up. If you have a massive wedding and likely won’t make it around to everyone in person, at least take a moment to grab the mic after toasts and thank everyone for coming!wedding day tips for bride and groom thank your parents after toasts
  8. Try to take moments here and there to step back and soak it all in.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The day is finally here! All the details came together, and it is finally the day you get to marry your bestie! It goes by way too fast, so try and soak it in and take mental snapshots! Talk to your fiance about this so you can try and remind each other throughout the day. A few key moments to try and do this are: once you’ve put your wedding dress on, when you’re about to walk down the aisle, when exchanging vows, during the toasts, and when you’re crushin the dance floor!wedding day tips for bride and groom at their reception
  9. If your parents helped at all, whether financially or with planning, take a moment to thank them publicly.                                                                                                                                            They might not express it, but this day is most likely a big dream for them too. It’s something they are proud of, and is important to them. So be sure to let everyone know how thankful you are for them and all their help! This wasn’t a common thing to do when we got married, and it’s something I really wish we had done. A great time to do this is right after toasts.

I truly hope these wedding day tips will be of value to you on your big day! Looking for more advice? Check out my post on how to create a wedding budget here!

{How to Create a Wedding Budget} Wedding Planning Tips

How to Create a Wedding Budget | Wedding Planning Tips | Kathryn Kim Photography | Colorado Mountain Wedding Photographer | Advice for Planning Your Wedding | How to Plan a Wedding | Colorado Wedding Photographers

Congratulations, you have gained a fiance! Hooray! Now to start the insane process of planning a wedding! There are waaay more details involved than you would ever dream, and the first place to start is the good ole budget. Now you have likely never done this before, so you find yourself googling, “How to create a wedding budget?!” And rightfully so! As a Colorado mountain wedding photographer, I have taken it upon myself to create a lil post outlining the logistics for you, and to hopefully make it easier!

how to create a wedding budget by kathryn kim photography

1. Figure out your grand total that you have to spend. This is the first step in how to create a wedding budget, because you gotta know what you’re workin with!

2. Write out all the different categories/vendors you will need to spend money on. Such as photographer, venue, catering, flowers, etc.

how to create a wedding budget by kathryn kim photography

3. Prioritize all categories starting with ones that are most important all the way down to least important. Start with your top 5, and your bottom 5, and you can fill in the middle from there. Really think about what is important to the two of you, not just what is “typical” at a wedding.

4. Research typical costs for each category/vendor within the area that you’re having the wedding, and fill in accordingly. You may be surprised at what some actually cost! But this will give you an idea of what to start with.

This is a great place to start. You may find as you go that you need to adjust cost based on reality vs. your initial projection, and this is normal. Just be sure to as you’re adjusting to always remain in budget. If you increase an expense in one category, you have to decrease in another. If you find yourself over budget, think of creative ways to cut costs. Pull on your resources/connections, and think of possible DIY projects, or ways to save/make more money and add to the budget. Feeling a little more confident on how to create a wedding budget? I sure hope so!

Sarah - Great tips! This is an awesome resource for anyone planning a wedding! I love how you encouraged people to stay true to themselves as well, I think going over budget many times comes from doing something because it’s typical at a wedding not because the couple really wants to.

jiyeon - everybody has budget when it comes to wedding! this is such a great article for the couples who are just starting with the planning!

Ashley - Thank you for reminding me that I never want to budget or plan a wedding ever again. Lol! Great tips Kathryn!

Kara Pearson - Pretty detail shots, and good advice! Budgets are so hard.

Haley Allen - This is such good information for planning a wedding. It’s so overwhelming with everything out there. I love how you paired it with these detail shots!!!

Alicia Yarrish - Wedding budgets can be so difficult to plan! Everything you hit on is definitely a great place to start! I’d also encourage clients to hire a wedding planner- it truly makes all the difference!

Melissa Hirsch - Love these tips – especially #3! So easy to fall into that thinking of “What do MOST people do?!” when planning your wedding budget. Doesn’t matter – it’s YOUR day!

Joshua - Great advices! It is also important to mention about the wedding cakes because many people didn’t realize how much wedding cake is really cost until very last minute. Wedding cakes are not cheap.

Shannon - I love the advice regarding listing your top 5 priorities and the 5 items that are least important. Very useful!

Samantha Jessup - This seems like a good place to start if i ever actually get engaged lol

Kira - Excellent advice for any couple planning their wedding. I am in the industry and was still surprised at what my wedding budget should be. Thanks for sharing!

Teresa Woodhull - These are great tips! I wish I would have done a better job budgeting for my own wedding, it was crazy how quickly things added up! Thank you for sharing!

Claudia, A Day To Remember - You definitely hit the high points, but as a wedding planner, developing a budget is so much more! I would love to see creatives encouraging their couples to hire a wedding planner, who can save them so much time in research for, not just their budget, but selecting the right team for their BIG day!

Andrea - Budget planning: probably the most critical element when it comes to coordinating and planning the big event! I love this tip when it come to prioritizing, “Start with your top 5, and your bottom 5, and you can fill in the middle from there. Really think about what is important to the two of you, not just what is “typical” at a wedding.” That’s great advice, I wish I would’ve done that when I was planning my own wedding!

ginny - Great info for those on a budget! I am drooling over your little details. Love these tones!
