Kalie and Nate contacted me because they wanted some epic Rocky Mountain National Park engagement photos. Obviously, I am always game for an RMNP adventure session! Nate grew up in Denver, but lives in Grand Junction now. He is an outdoorsy guy and is very familiar with RMNP, so he was excited. Kalie lives in Reno, Nevada and had never explored Rocky Mountain National Park. So we had a blast during their RMNP  engagement session, to say the least!

It was a pretty chilly winter day, and Kalie was brave enough to rock a dress. I love when my couples will take on cold weather in order to get epic photos! I love the combo of Kalie’s forest green dress with Nate’s blue plaid button down. Speaking of engagement session outfits, be sure to check out one of my recent posts for what to wear for an engagement session! This is a great example of a solid with a pattern combo!

It was a pretty moody day in Estes Park, which made for some pretty incredible Rocky Mountain National Park engagement photos. I love love love fog! The fog was obviously gorgeous, and we started getting some lovely color as the sunset was coming as well. Interested in an RMNP adventure session, or seeing a bride and groom session that I’ve captured in RMNP? Check out my post from Ellen and Robb’s wedding here, where we did summer bride and groom portraits in Rocky Mountain National Park! I hope you enjoy these Rocky Mountain National Park engagement photos! Email me to set up your session today!

{What to wear for an engagement session!} Colorado Mountain Wedding Photographer | Wedding Planning Tips

Wedding planning tips | What to wear for an engagement session | Kathryn Kim Photography | Colorado Engagement Photographer | Colorado Mountain Wedding Photographer

So you recently became a fiance, (yay!) and next up is the engagement sesh! Now comes the all too common question of what to wear for an engagement session?!

what to wear for an engagement session red plaid flannel

First things first, wear an outfit you feel confident in! If you feel great in your outfit, it’s going to come across in your photos! If you buy a new top, bottoms, dress etc., I highly recommend having someone take a quick picture of you in the outfit beforehand.  You want to make sure you feel like it photographs well!

A great rule of thumb for what to wear in an engagement session, is for one person to wear a solid and the other a pattern. You want to coordinate your outfits/ colors but don’t be too matchy! Rich, bold colors are usually a great choice. Bright colors tend to be distracting. Patterns such as plaid or polka dots can look great, so don’t shy away! You just don’t want the pattern to be too busy that it distracts from your beautiful faces! Feel free to ask my opinion if you are unsure, I am more than happy to help!

Feeling a little more confident in what to wear for an engagement session? Now, let’s talk specific seasons!

SUMMER:
Ahh beautiful lush green summer shoots. I do love them! It might be toasty, but we will try and find some shade! Ladies, feel free to wear a cute dress or skirt with heels or flats. Flowy dresses are always fun because we can make your twirling dreams come true! Dressy shorts with a nice top can be really cute too! For the guys, a nice pair of shorts and a v neck shirt looks great! He can wear pants, just be sure to consider the heat!

SPRING:
Good ole unpredictable Colorado spring. I tend to think we don’t really have spring here… it often goes straight from winter to summer! But if we’re lucky and having actual spring weather, it can be so beautiful! Pretty similar to the summer ideas, a dress or skirt will be really cute. You could add leggings and a light sweater if it’s a little chilly. Or leggings/jeans with a cute top looks great as well! For the guys, pants with a nice short sleeve, or nice shorts or jeans with a button down are great options.

FALL:
Eek I love fall engagement sessions! There is nothing like the insanely gorgeous fall colors that Colorado has to offer! This season is the perfect opportunity to dress adorably cozy! To me fall screams plaid, vests, leggings, jeans, boots, beanies. You could also go for a light sweater and scarf. Or you could rock a cute long dress! For the guys, jeans or solid colored pants with a button down or thick plaid flannel is always a great outfit!

WINTER:
I looove snowy winter sessions! They can be a little hard to plan for since snow is rather unpredictable. But they are breath taking! Layers can be your friend with these sessions. If our shoot is in the foothills or mountains it can be pretty windy and feel a lot colder than the actual temperature. So it’s always a great idea to throw a cute stylish jacket in the car just in case! Form fitting sweaters, jeans, cute pants, and boots are great ideas here. For the guys, a button down, jeans or nice pants, sweater, or light jacket are some nice options.

Here are a few more suggestions for what to wear in an engagement session!

I think it’s great to have 2 outfits each. One casual and one dressy. This will add variety to the photos so it almost feels like you had 2 different sessions! Ladies, feel free to go all out and wear a fancy floor length dress! I mean, how many times are you going to get super dressed up like this?! Your man can bring a nice coat to throw over a button down and you two will look fabulous!

Accessories to add variety your engagement session outfits:
Necklace, earrings, bracelets, scarf, beanie, suspenders, bow tie, tie, stylish hat

Think about the main colors in the location that we chose. If we’re shooting in the summer where there are tons of trees, you might want to avoid wearing green so you don’t blend in with the background. This might also happen if you’re having a fall engagement session and there’s going to be a lot of yellow aspens!

Feel free to check out my Pinterest board for some visual outfit inspiration! Lastly, definitely check out my post on tips for a successful engagement session here!

I hope you feel more confident in what to wear for an engagement session now! I can’t wait!

tips for a successful engagement session taken on an adventure session in rocky mountain national park estes park colorado

You’re engaged, you’ve booked an amazing photographer (yay!), and next up is the engagement session. Now what?! You’ve never done this before, so you’re feeling a little nervous, which is totally normal! Never fear, I have put together a few tips for a successful engagement session that will have you feeling more confident going into the session, and therefore result in a super beautiful, fun shoot!

Tips for a Successful Engagement Session:

1. Choose your outfits ahead of time!

Even if you have an idea in your head of what you’re going to wear, lay them out together. Or better yet, try them on in advance! Make sure you love how you feel in them, and how they look together! I have stressed myself out multiple times when I waited until the last minute to pick out my outfit to attend a wedding for example. In my head, it’s going to look great. And then I hate how it looks when I put it on, then start scrambling for something that looks halfway decent. Next thing I know we’re running late, I’m stressed and in a bad mood! This all could have been avoided if I had taken a few minutes to try on the outfit ahead of time. So organize your outfits at least a couple weeks in advance, feel confident, and avoid potential stress! (And feel free to ask my opinion, I am more than happy to help! See Sammi and Conlin’s epic mountain engagement session!)

2. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early.

I have chosen your start time for a very specific reason, and that is based around our sweet, dear friend : the sun. Timing is extremely important because once the sun goes down, it’s gone. And along with it is our available light! I love shooting at “golden hour” which is the last hour before sunset. The light is golden and oh so beautiful! But it’s a bit tricky since you want to finish right at sunset. So it’s super important to start our session on time! Also remember to account for potential traffic depending on the time/location. (Check out Jess and Nathan’s Evergreen engagement session!)

3. Embrace the awkward.

Like I mentioned,  you’ve never really done this before. It usually feels awkward at first, but then it gets fun I promise! Pretty much all of my couples say about halfway through, “I thought this was going to be weird and uncomfortable, but it’s actually really fun!” And why wouldn’t it be?! You get the perfect excuse to snuggle up close and sneak ridiculous amounts of kisses in with your forever bae! Sounds like a good time to me! Which leads me to my next engagement session tip. (See Carol and Ryan’s fall engagement session!)

4. Get ready for PDA

You read it right. I need a Public Display of Affection from ya. You two are getting married, which means you like each other, a lot. And we need to show that in the photos! Now yes, there is a wide range on the PDA scale…and don’t worry, I’m not gonna ask you to do things that would make your grandma scream. But I highly encourage touching on some level in all photos…even if it’s just holding hands or a cute forehead kiss. Because it makes for beautiful photos that show your love and affection for your future spouse. And that’s what we’re here for right? (Check out Emma and LeRon’s lookout mountain engagement session!)

5. Take a shot!

Yes, I do mean indulging in an adult beverage. A lot of couples feel nervous about being in front of the camera, and it helps to take a shot or drink a beer right before starting the shoot to loosen up and feel more comfortable. If this sounds like it would be good for y’all, then go for it!

6. Focus on the why!

Yes I want you to get all sentimental and mushy, and remember why we’re all here in the first place. This season of engagement is so sweet and special, and you’ll never be in it again! On the way to your session, reflect together on the moment you first knew you loved each other, your first kiss, your favorite memories together, how you felt during the proposal, why you’re so excited to get married and start your lives together as husband and wife etc. This is what it’s all about!

7. Just trust me!

This is what it all boils down to. You hired me because I am a professional, and I have tons of experience with this! I have all sorts of tricks to bring out those genuine smiles, laughs, and emotions. Sometimes what I’m asking you to do might feel silly, but you’ve gotta trust me, and the outcome will be glorious! Now that you’ve read my genius tips for a successful engagement session, you’re ready to make some magic with me!

Jennifer M Outlaw - These are some great tips for a successful engagement session. I think the most important one is the trust your photographer. You hired a pro for a reason. Trust them and let them do their job which is to take amazing photos like you have in this post. You are an amazing Colorado engagement photographer.

sarah - Oh my gosh these are spot on…. awkward… check, arrive early.. check, literally the best engagement session tips ever!

Natalie Williams - These are great tips! Your engagement photography is lovely, I would absolutely trust you completely!

Kira - Great tips for a successful engagement session. My favorite is to plan outfits and TRY THEM ON beforehand. I, like you, will think something looks great in my head and then on it’s just a big ol’ mess. 🙂

Jess - I honestly think the best engagement session tip on here is the one that says to just trust you! Your images are beautiful and there is a reason for that! You clearly know what you are doing, and it probably helps people to relax and look better in their images.

Meg and Joe are my kind of people! They are a super laid back, down to earth couple who love the outdoors. When they told me they were having a Mountain View Ranch Wedding, it made so much sense! This laid back venue matches them perfectly. They chose to have their ceremony at the Creekside ceremony location, which is just gorgeous. The mountains are surrounding this venue and they make for beautiful backdrops for bride and groom portraits!

When we first met,  Meg was telling me that one of her favorite things about Joe is how he challenges her. When they first started dating she had never snowboarded before, and a few months later she was doing black diamonds on the regular! Um, wow! I photographed Meg and Joe’s engagement photos at Loveland Pass several months before their wedding. It was chilly, but they were hardcore and used the cold as an excuse to snuggle a little closer! It was evident from the start of the shoot that these two had some serious chemistry! They crushed the engagement sesh and I think you’ll agree with me that they did the same during their bride and groom portraits on the wedding day!

If you are having a Mountain View Ranch Wedding, please get in touch! I would absolutely love to chat about being your photographer at this amazing venue. Meg and Joe, your wedding was just as amazing as I thought it would be! I hope you guys enjoy seeing some of my favorite shots from this wedding. Enjoy!

Della Terra Mountain Chateau Wedding | Kathryn Kim Photography | Estes Park Wedding Venues | Rocky Mountain National Park | Colorado Mountain Wedding Photographer

Shelby and Brad’s Della Terra Mountain Chateau Wedding was stunning! This venue is hands down one of the best Estes Park wedding venues there is. Part of it’s property is in Rocky Mountain National Park, which is pretty amazing!

I met with Brad and Shelby over drinks at a cute pub in Arvada. They shared their super cute love story about how they met in college. They were friends first, and eventually realized they were hanging out alone more and more. It was like their love took them by surprise and the next thing they knew, they were inseperable! So cute.

As a Colorado mountain wedding photographer, I have shot at this venue often and love it! There is nothing like a September Della Terra Mountain Chateau wedding! The weather is fabulous, the color is beautiful.  We began the day with getting ready photos. The new suite for the ladies to get ready in is so perfect! These two opted for a first look in the forest, which was so sweet and precious. Brad’s reaction was so cute and I just love capturing those moments for couples! We gallivanted around the property taking bride and groom and bridal party photos for awhile pre ceremony. Next thing we knew, it was time for these two to get married!

Shelby’s twin nieces were the flower girls and they were hilarious and adorable making that long walk down the aisle. Shelby took everyone’s breath away as she came down the aisle with her dad.

Everyone had an incredible time dancing the night away and celebrating these two lovebirds. Be sure to check out the amazing vendors involved with this Della Terra Mountain Chateau Wedding!
